Is Google Page Rank dead?

I read an article on searchEngineLand recently and was happy to note that Google may not update their page rank toolbar any more. Even if they do update it, it will be for their internal consumption, most of us will not come to know.

This is such a relief! And I hope they stick to this resolution.
This will certainly see an end to a lot of heartbreaks and heartaches! Many of us have been obsessed with Google page rank; our lives would literally depend upon Google page rank updates. And God forbid if the page rank went down! There was and has been immense pressure on SEO professionals to ensure that websites achieve a decent Page Rank. I stopped obsessing about it many years back.

What exactly is a Google Page Rank?

The paragraph below is from Wikipedia:

According to Google:

“PageRank works by counting the number and quality of links to a page to determine a rough estimate of how important the website is. The underlying assumption is that more important websites are likely to receive more links from other websites”.

The Page rank is a numerical value provided to each webpage. It could be anything between 0 to 10. 10 is the highest value a webpage can have. The higher the page rank the more valuable a website is, in terms of quality of links and relevance.

You may find this article “Eight steps to get SEO wise” that I published it some time back helpful. It has specific mention about Google page rank. And here is another article “Updates and their repercussions in the life of a webmaster” that you may find relevant, I specifically wrote this after a Google update when many websites lost rankings.

My advice to most webmasters is to:

1. Focus on quality content,
2. Follow SEO best practices
3. Market your websites and webpages on the internet through the various channels available
4. Not get attached to one method only and continue to explore different possibilities
5. Analyze data
6. Implement changes
7. Improve methods
8. And be ready to accept changes.

The rest will follow. Nothing happens in a day but overtime you will notice the results of your efforts.
